Paris Olympics- 2024

This summer is an exciting one because the 2024 Summer Olympics are taking place in Paris, France!

The Summer Olympics will begin on July 26th and go until August 11th

There are 32 different sports in the Summer Olympics, and they are so fun to watch! Including four new sports: breakdancing, climbing, skateboarding, and surfing. Use this link to view the Olympic schedule- https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/schedule

Each Olympic medal will be infused with iron from the original Eiffel Tower, which was built for the 1889 World’s Fair.

The official mascot is the Olympic Phryg, a traditional hat worn by French revolutionaries. The Phryg is pronounced "freege" and symbolizes freedom

The 2024 games will be the first gender equal Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the goal of having as many women as men registered.

The opening ceremony will be on water, with athletes on boats going down the Seine River.

In Paris, they have spent the last couple years cleaning up the Seine river in order to prepare for the Olympic swimming and diving events to take place, right there in the river!

I'm most excited for the surfing events! Surfing is my favorite sport, and this year, the event will take place in Tahiti, French Polynesia. As some of you know, I lived in Tahiti for a period of time, and it is where I completed my French studies. Tahiti is an amazing place, and I am so excited for their opportunity to host an Olympic sport. They are also breaking the record for the farthest competition to be held outside the host. Tahiti is almost 10,000 miles away from Paris!
