- There is only one set of endings for -er, -ir, or -re verbs.
- It's a past tense for past descriptions and used to narrate events or how things were in the past.
The steps to conjugating l'imparfait:
Conjugate the verb in the nous form of the present tense.
Remove the -ons.
Add the endings for the imperfect.

je -ais
tu -ais

9. How to you use the imparfait with irregular verbs?
Here is what to remember about l'imparfait with irregular verbs in the present tense:
To form l'imparfait of être, use ét as the stem and add the imparfait endings:
j'étais
tu étais
il/elle/on était
nous étions
vous étiez
ils/elles étaient
To form the imperfect of verbs with an irregular stem in the nous form of the present tense, carry those over to form their imperfect:
aller (to go): nous allons → all + imperfect endings
avoir (to have): nous avons → av + imperfect endings
faire (to do/to make): nous faisons → fais + imperfect endings
sortir (to go out): nous sortons → sort + imperfect endings
boire (to drink): nous buvons → buv + imperfect endings
prendre (to take): nous prenons → pren + imperfect endings
Verbs that end in -ger, like manger, drop the e before the g in nous and vous forms, but add e for the je, tu, il/elle/on, ils/elles forms in the imperfect to keep the soft g sound:
je mangeais
tu mangeais
il/elle/on mangeait
nous mangions
vous mangiez
ils/elles mangeaient
